on our first night out in Seattle, mindy and i noticed in the local paper that High on Fire were playing pretty close to our hotel which was a few blocks in from the famous Pike St. Market. i've seen High on Fire probably eight times and they've never faltered from anything but flawless unfuckwithability. awesome. highly un-awesome was that they were opening for Opeth (oh pfhthflflflf). this is a band that has that kind of flock of fans who, with certainty, will wear one of their nine Opeth shirts to see...Opeth. real die-hards, real "this is what i got into after insane clown posse". Opeth are shockingly accepted by people who should know better (chunklet...really?) but i'm not buying it. but idle judgement is boring, aside from being hilarious and a good indicator of a keen bullshit detector, so i wasn't trying to make a night of it because i was bound and determined to find a non sexually compromising way into this show because OF COURSE it was sold out. instead of hiding behind dumpsters and waiting for security to get eye-locked on some hot topic boobs, minders and i went into the bar side and while showing our id's, the door guy told us to lighten the hell up, as we looked like we saw a kitten shot outside. i told him we were visiting and thought this would be a high point of our vacation so we were just bummed that we couldn't make it in. and we lightened up, but not because we were ordered to. we nestled up to the bar, i heard hof start and i walked over to the doorway between the bar and the showplace to hear what they were playing. door guy pulls me aside and says, "you and your friend walk by and act like you're flashing your wrist stamp and you can go in". so thanks to that guy for being genuinely nice and not genuinely creepy. que the weepy violin....this was the most beat up hof set ever. maybe it's all hard drugs and good times getting the best of them but pike's voice was shot (it happens), everything was slow, probably about 3 times i noticed everyone just totally out of sync, pike's bankable solos were more wincing old mare than lightening young champion. now that was like watching a kitten get shot. everyone is entitled to a low point though, so i still have faith, just don't play "death is this communion" songs because they're good but you could've done better with that record and maybe try to channel the spirit of that tour you did with joe preston on bass.
this might restore that faith, actually this restores my faith in most things:
